SEO for Small Businesses, What Actually Works and What Is a Myth
SEO agencies sell expensive packages that do a lot, but not the things that actually matter. Here is what actually moves the needle in Google, no agency nonsense.
An SEO agency called me once. The offer: 800 zł a month, "full service," a monthly report, 50 backlinks to start.
I asked, "which keywords?" Silence, then, "we'll pick them individually once you sign the contract."
That's most "SEO for small businesses" in a nutshell. A lot of noise, very little substance. Here's what actually makes a difference.
Start With What the Customer Searches For, Not What You Want Them To
The biggest mistake: optimizing for phrases that sound good to the business owner, not to the actual customer.
A real example: a construction company wants to rank for "general construction contracting." Their actual customers search for "turnkey house build [city]" or "renovation company [neighbourhood]."
The gap between those two phrasings is worth several thousand zloty a month in leads.
How to find out what your customers actually search for:
- Google Search Console (free), shows which queries you're already appearing for
- Google's autocomplete, start typing a phrase and see what it suggests
- The "People also ask" box in Google results, ready-made topics for subpages
- Talk to your customers, literally ask them how they searched for your service
Local SEO Beats Generic SEO
If you run a business in a specific city, ranking for "hairdresser" is a pipe dream. "Hairdresser downtown Wroclaw" is a game you can actually win.
Local SEO comes down to:
- Google Business Profile, filled out 100%, with photos, hours, and a description. It's free and often more important than the website itself in local results.
- NAP consistency, your name, address, and phone number identical across your website, your Google Business Profile, and every directory listing.
- Reviews, 20 reviews at 4.8+ beats a competitor with a nicer website. Ask every satisfied customer for one.
- Local phrases on the page, "plumber Poznan," "appliance repair Grunwald," not stuffed spammily into the footer, but woven naturally into the actual page copy.
The Technical Details That Actually Matter
Google officially confirms these technical factors influence ranking:
Page speed
A page that takes 6 seconds to load has a higher bounce rate. Google sees this. Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, INP) have been part of the algorithm since 2021.
How to check: PageSpeed Insights (free). A mobile score under 50 is a sign you're losing rankings over it.
HTTPS
Since 2018, missing an SSL certificate is an active ranking penalty. Every host gives you one for free through Let's Encrypt.
Mobile-first
Google mainly indexes the mobile version of your site. If your site is unusable on a phone, you're effectively invisible.
Duplicate content
www.business.com and business.com look like two different addresses to Google. If both are accessible, you have duplicate content. One should redirect to the other (a 301).
Content, Just Not the Kind Agencies Write
"Our company offers comprehensive services in the field of..." Google will not reward that. Users don't read it, they bounce, and Google drops the page in rankings as a result.
What actually works:
- Direct answers to direct questions, people type questions into Google, your page should answer them
- One page, one topic, don't cram ten services onto a single subpage
- Length that matches the topic, a how-to article can run 1500 words, a service page can do fine with 400
What Does NOT Work (Even Though Agencies Sell It)
- Mass directory link building, Google ignores it or penalizes it. "50 backlinks" for 200 zł is spam at best.
- Buying reviews, Google is getting better at detecting this, and it risks getting your Google Business Profile suspended.
- Keyword stuffing, repeating a phrase 40 times on a page hasn't worked since 2012.
- Meta keywords, Google hasn't used them in over a decade.
The Realistic Timeline
SEO is a long-term investment. Realistic expectations look like this:
- First results: 3 to 6 months
- Stable visibility: 12+ months
- Visible ROI: after a year or two
If someone promises results in 30 days, they're either lying, or doing something Google will penalize you for a year from now.
Before You Hire an SEO Agency
Ask them:
- Which specific phrases will we actually rank for?
- How do you measure success? (organic traffic, conversions, not "visibility")
- Do I get access to my own Google Search Console and Analytics?
- What happens to the results once we stop working together?
If you don't get specific answers, walk away.
